Help Us Inspire the Next Generation of Amateur Radio

One of the greatest challenges facing amateur radio today isn’t technology—it’s introducing new people to a hobby that has so much to offer.

Many of us discovered amateur radio because someone took the time to show us what was possible. A mentor invited us to a field day, let us make our first contact, helped us study for our license, or simply shared their enthusiasm. Now it’s our turn.

At DETARC, we want to become more than a club that meets once a month. We want to become a club that actively engages our community and inspires the next generation of operators.

We Need Your Ideas

We’re looking for creative ways to introduce amateur radio to people who may have never heard of it—or who think it’s something their grandparents used to do.

What would capture the imagination of today’s youth?

Could we partner with:

  • Local schools
  • Homeschool groups
  • 4-H clubs
  • Scouts
  • STEM organizations
  • Libraries
  • Community events
  • Emergency preparedness fairs

Could we host:

  • Fox hunts
  • Build nights
  • “Get On The Air” events
  • Portable Parks on the Air activations
  • Ham radio demonstrations
  • Satellite communication demonstrations
  • Digital mode workshops
  • Maker projects using Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or Meshtastic
  • License classes for families

Maybe you have an idea none of us have considered yet.

We want to hear it.

We Need People Who Want to Make It Happen

Great ideas are only the beginning.

Every successful outreach event requires people who are willing to help plan, organize, teach, demonstrate equipment, mentor new operators, or simply spend an afternoon talking with curious visitors.

You don’t have to lead an entire project.

Maybe you enjoy:

  • Teaching
  • Public speaking
  • Working with youth
  • Event planning
  • Building antennas
  • Digital modes
  • Contesting
  • Emergency communications
  • Photography
  • Social media
  • Writing articles
  • Setting up portable stations

Every talent has a place.

Even if you only have a few hours to volunteer throughout the year, your contribution can make a lasting impact.

Why This Matters

Amateur radio has never been more relevant.

In a world filled with smartphones and the Internet, amateur radio still offers something unique: learning real technical skills, communicating without infrastructure, serving our communities during emergencies, exploring electronics, experimenting with digital technologies, making friends around the world, and discovering the satisfaction of building something with your own hands.

If we don’t actively share that story, fewer people will discover it.

The future of our hobby depends on operators who are willing to invest in those who come after us.

Join the Conversation

We’re just getting started, and we’d love your help.

If you have an idea for reaching our community—or if you’re willing to help bring someone else’s idea to life—please let us know using our outreach form.

Together, we can build outreach programs that make amateur radio exciting, accessible, and relevant for the next generation.

Let’s not wait for new hams to find us.

Let’s go find them.
