The Process

The DETARC VE Team sends test results to the VEC Coordinator (ARRL) electronically and the VEC Coordinator forwards test results to the FCC electronically so the candidate may go to the ULS.gov (Amateur Radio Section) website to obtain their call sign or License upgrade within about 3-4 days. Testing

The Technician test consists of 35 multiple choice written questions. The passing score is 80%. The General License consists of 35 multiple choice questions. The Extra tests consist of 50 multiple choice questions. Again, a passing score for both is 80%. The question pools are known and available on the Internet at several sites.

Make sure you are studying from a current question pool.

There are several written Study Guides available to assist the candidates in studying for their license tests.

The Technician License Question Pool changes July 1, 2026.

Operation

You may operate once you have your new call-sign. Successful General and Extra upgrades may use their new privileges with the CSCE form they receive at the test session. New Generals sign call-sign/AG and Extras sign call-sign/AE until they receive their new licenses.
